Treading Water

Lost at sea, I see your hands wailing.
I swim to your side
I take a breath and dive under
Pull your body onto my buoy.
We tread water and catch our breath
I tell you about the shoreline
Remind you of all that was on the land.
Your eyes light up
You take my hand
We begin to swim to shore.
You legs tire and arms fail.
You slip beneath the swell of a wave.
I take a breath and dive under
Pull your body onto my buoy.
We tread water and catch our breath
Holding each other’s hand
Enjoy the blessing of life
As air fills our lungs.
I point to the shore
Suggest a plan.
Just a few short swims,  a few short rests
Just a few more waves to tread.
You nod and agree
We face the shore together, hand in hand
We begin to swim to shore.
But you fool me and let me swim on.
By the time I notice you’ve stopped
You are submerged.
Without hesitation
I take a breath and dive under
Pull your body onto my buoy.
We tread water and catch our breath
Your eyes steady, empty.
You resent me for blessing you with life.
I point out the shoreline.
Suggest a plan
Just a few short swims, a few short rests.
You aren’t listening.
Just a few more waves to tread.
You don’t respond.
We face the shore together, hand in hand
But you let go when I try to swim on.
You hold my stare as you let go
I watch as the next swell engulfs you
I take a breath but don’t dive under
Instead I pull my own body onto my buoy.
I tread water and catch my breath
Your hair swirling is the last I see
I think of the shoreline
Remember the plan.
Just a few short swims,  a few short rests
Just a few more waves to tread.
I need to swim to shore.
